Abstract
This paper sets in perspective the evolution of accreditation trends in the U.S. and considers present concerns about accreditation. The authors examine the impact of social change on accreditation, ways professions have influenced educational programs and institutions through accreditation procedures, the influence of the courts on the role of accrediting agencies in society, and federal involvement in accreditation. The authors conclude that unless accrediting agencies are able to reinvigorate the accrediting process, with emphasis on national welfare, the public could insist on other means of external monitoring of higher education.
